L'Antica, an Italian bar, pizzeria and enoteca in the heart of South Fremantle, has a vibe and community feel synonymous with Perth’s hipster coffee hangouts. Close to the local beach and port, the interior reflects L'Antica’s approach to historically significant Italian cuisine which serves focaccia genovese in the day and pizzas from Naples in the evenings.

L’Antica means antique in Italian, which emphasizes the feel of something that recalls a quality and atmosphere of the past, an ancient way of doing things with a sense of local history attached to the area it is in.

WEIJENBERG worked with the client to bring this fabled past from Italy into present-day South Fremantle in a style that is accessible and stimulating while achieving an overall relaxed air for customers to sit back, enjoy their time and watch the world go by.

WEIJENBERG’s design expertise complements the simple yet historically significant ingredients used at L’Antica. The artisanal meats cured in the specially built glass-fronted cantina are set into the 110-year-old local clay brick walls. Accompanying dishes to the mains come from the the wood-fired oven which sits at the heart of the space.

WEIJENBERG’s approach was to enhance the shop’s existing features by making the most of the long façade, creating an ambiance that interweaves the social fabric of South Fremantle into the industrial-like interior.

Breaking the norm adopted by other restaurants, two long tables form the centrepiece of the restaurant, which are angled towards the main bar and run parallel to the street. Warm materials such as reclaimed jetty wood and brass are used. Large copper lights and a shiny wood-fired pizza oven have been fitted for a homely feel.

The custom-made façade can be fully opened to take in the comfortable Mediterranean climate, extending seating to the outside deck and embracing Fremantle and all its social draws.
